Grigory Sokolov (born April 18, 1950 in Leningrad) is a Russian pianist.

Sokolov began studying the piano at the age of five, entering the Leningrad Conservatory to study with Leah Zelikhman when he was seven. Later he studied with Moisey Khalfin at the same conservatory. At age twelve he gave his first major recital in Moscow. At age sixteen he came to international attention after winning the 1966 International Tchaikovsky Piano Competition, being awarded the Gold Medal on a unanimous decision by a jury headed by Emil Gilels. Beginning in the late 1980s Sokolov’s name gradually became better known outside Russia, until now his reputation as an important concert pianist is well established.
