En 1933, Violette (Isabelle Huppert), una muchacha de 18 años, vive con sus padres en un minúsculo apartamento, en condiciones muy modestas. Sus padres sueñan para Violette una existencia diferente a la suya, una existencia que no le pueden dar, no obstante.
